About My Classroom

The name of my school is North Bend Elementary/Middle School. It is located in Baltimore, Maryland in the city district. The school website is located in this link.

The school population​ ranges from pre-kindergarten to 8th grade and has a total of 509 students. The student to teacher ratio is 20 to 1.The student race demographic is 93% African American, 1% American Indian, 3% Hispanic and 3% other.

The student gender demographic is 51% Male and 49% Female. 85% of North Bend students  are qualified for free and reduced lunch.However, due to a city wide initiative of providing lunches to all students due to the average socioeconomic status of city schools students being below the poverty line, all students now eat free lunches.

Programs and Resources

The GAL program is an implementation of gifted curricula for grades K-5, accelerated curricula for grades 6-8, targeted and sustained professional development of all staff members around best practices in gifted education. The Special Education program includes the parent(s), determines the appropriate specialized and/or related services that are required to meet the needs of the individual student in the least restrictive environment. The PAL program is designed to prepare students with Autism to be career ready, independent learners who are able to be self-sufficient, communicative and productive members of society. The Fresh Fruits Program is an initiative that brings fresh snacks into elementary school classrooms to enhance nutrition and learning. The BeARS Program is a school-wide incentive and discipline program in order to improve the overall school climate by teaching and rewarding appropriate behavior, providing consistent consequences for inappropriate behaviors, and creating a peaceful and uniform environment to increase academic achievement.

Technology

Our school has moderate technology access, I am provided with both a projector and a document camera. My room is equipped with a Promethian board and suitable wifi. Each classroom has at least two computers for student use. 

Mobility Rate

The mobility rate at North Bend 34.9% for all elementary students and 24.8% for all middle school students.

Planning

The Language Arts curriculum is scripted for teacher, but assessments are teacher created. Planning is divided into three sections: Long Range, Unit, and Lesson planning. Each of the sections are built off of each other. Long range planning is used as a map to achieve mastery of the standards. Unit planning is used to backwards plan to achieve mastery on assessments. Lesson planning is used to attend to differentiate instruction for students.

Outside Assignments

I teach in our after care program and tutor students there as well. This is through the West Hills program. This program is in partnership with the school to offer students additional tutoring and after school activities.

Classroom Information

I teach third grade language arts and social studies. My grade is departmentalized. I teach language arts for two hours and social studies for thirty minutes. I have forty four students. I have twenty-one in my homeroom class and twenty-three in the other. The race demographic is 98% African American and 2% other. The gender demographic is 52% male and 48% female. The student academic assistance demographic is 95% Non-Accommodated and 5% Accommodated. The student academic level is to be determined for the 2017-2018 school year
